Church Cottage has made the energy transition, by replacing a gas combi-boiler for the Vaillant Arotherm Plus 7kW heat pump.
This high thermal mass, uninsulated granite building, lent itself well to an open-loop steady state heating strategy. As to say, we are using the building fabric as thermal buffer capacity, to allow gentle delivery of heat via panel radiators, maintaining a constant internal air temperature of 21°C.
Across the heating season this system achieved a seasonal coefficient of performance, of 420%. This was in the absence of any insulation, and in a predominantly single glazed building.
Three radiators were upgraded from single panel, to double panel radiators, but maintaining the original “footprint” on the walls.
Here we achieved cost parity with a quoted boiler replacement, and the homeowner is now consuming far less energy. We even fit the new hot water cylinder, in the old boiler cupboard!
